Square Dance - what is it?
Two or more couples dance with easy walking steps to the commands of a "CALLER" ever changing formations as e.g. Stars, Circles, and Lines. (This is an overall definition.)

What is the difference between Square Dance and Social Dancing?
You can Square Dance, even if you got "two left feet", because it seldom matters whether you start with your right or your left foot. Right and left hands are more important. But the transmission from the brain to the hands is much easier than from the brain to the feet.

What is the difference between Square Dance and Contra Dance?
Contra Dance means fixed sequences, which will be explained and walked through beforehand. Usually this is danced in long lines with any number of couples. Thus nobody must sit out who wants to dance. Here I often call in German language.
Square Dance in the specific sense means four couples dancing together, where the movements are called spontaneously. Here I try to call as much as possible in English language.

What is the difference between Square Dance and Round Dance?
Round Dancing uses the same footwork as Social Dancing, but the steps are cued continuously. Since the Cuer has to tell you almost every step, he/she has to talk at least twice as much as a square dance caller. And the dancers have to learn a lot more terms right from the start.
In a Round Dance, you usually dance with the same partner throughout, while in a square dance you dance with the whole group.

What is the difference between Square Dance and Folk Dance?
In Square Dance, you do not need to learn anything by rot, because everything is called throughout the dance. This way, however, you depend very much on the caller.

What is the difference between Square Dance and Line Dance?
You could Line Dance all alone - you just need the music for the rhythm and four walls for the orientation. In Square Dance, you need other people as a reference point. If you are afraid of touching other people, or be touched, you would be better off at Line Dancing.

What is the difference between Square Dance and Disco?
You may not smoke in the dance hall. Alcohol before and during the dance is frowned upon. The volume of the music is set to enable you to hear the calls of the dance leader. The stucture of the music counts to eight and not just 1 - 2; 1 - 2.

What is the difference between Square Dance and Jogging?
Square Dance seems to bring more fun, if I compare the faces.

What is the difference between Square Dance and Nordic Walking?
For Square Dance, you donīt need to walk on a shtick.

What is the difference between Square Dance and Sports?
There is no competition with winners and loosers. All must help together to complete the dance sequences successfully.

What is the difference between Open Country and other Square Dance Clubs?
We can integrate newcomers at the start of every dance evening. You do not need to wait one year for the start of a new class.

What is the difference between Open Country and a Square Dance Class?
At a square dance class you learn a lot of basics as fast and efficiently as may be, and hopefully you can dance after you learned them.
At Open Country, we will show you the Dosado, the Swing, and Left Allemande. From there on you can dance. Of course you will learn more, by and by; but this is a desirable side effect, not the main purpose.
