To memorize June 17 as a National Holiday for about 40 years,
I promised for June 17, 2008 a SingAlong with Germany as the theme.
But I had to perform some kind of a Spagat. Two new ladies dropped in,
and a SingAlong is not the easiest event to introduce new people
to square dancing. Fortunately they arrived early, so we split them up
into 1 Boy and 1 Girl; then I used my well-tried spiel and taught them

Zur Erinnerung daran, daß der 17. Juni lange Zeit nationaler Feiertag war,
versprach ich für den 17. Juni 2008 ein SingAlong mit Deutschland als Thema.
Ich mußte allerdings einen Spagat vollführen. Zwei neue Damen kamen an,
und bei einem SingAlong ist es nicht so einfach, neue Teilnehmer
in den Squaredance einzuführen. Zum Glück kamen sie früh,
also teilten wir sie in 1 Boy und 1 Girl auf, und mit meiner erprobten Methode
zeigte ich ihnen

Dosado - the most difficult movement in squaredance,
Swing - the most enjoyable movement in squaredance,
and Allemande Left - the most important movement.
By that time we could muster a square, so I taught Grand Right and Left too.

Dosado - die schwierigste Figur im Squaredance,
Swing - die schönste Figur im Squaredance,
und Allemande Left, die wichtigste Figur.
Inzwischen konnten wir einen Square aufstellen,
also zeigte ich auch gleich Grand Right and Left.

Then we started with a Mixer to the medley “Bavarian Jamboree”
from the Greensleeves Country Dance Band, immediately followed by a
Square to “The Happy Wanderer”.

Dann begannen wir mit einem Mixer auf „Bavarian Jamboree“
von der Greensleeves Country Dance Band, gefolgt von einem Square auf
„The Happy Wanderer“ (Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann).

The newcomers were invited to the next tip too, on
“You ‘re Grand” and “Marina”.
Then they should drop out and watch, because the next tip
was with Grand Square: Post War reminiscences of GIs in
“Frauline” and “Schatzie”.

Die Neulinge wurden auch zum nächsten Tip eingeladen, auf
„You ‘re Grand“ (Bei mir bist du schön)
und „Marina“. Danach sollten sie aussitzen und
zuschauen, denn es kam ein Tip mit Grand Square:
Nachkriegserinnerungen von GIs in „Frauline“ und „Schatzie“.

Two experienced dancers wanted a rest, so the newcomers were included again
for the next tip.
|
Zwei erfahrene Tänzer wollten pausieren, also tanzten die Neulinge
den nächsten Tip wieder mit.
|

I bought “Chime Bells” as a Christmas Record,
but this is not the theme. It is “Chime Bells are
ringing from a mountain high upon a Summer Eve”
- what I translated.

Ich kaufte „Chime Bells“ als Weihnachtsplatte,
aber das ist nicht ihr Thema. Darum übersetzte ich den Refrain
als „Hört ihr die Glocken von Sankt Bartholomä
über den Königsee“.

Speaking about Christmas - you may start to write your letter
to Santa Claus: “I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas.”
|
Apropos Weihnachten - man kann schon anfangen, den Wunschzettel
zu schreiben: „I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas“.
|

Only a Hippopotamus will do
I want no Crocodile and no Rhinoceros,
I only want a Hippopotamus“

Ich wünsche mir ein Nilpferd zu Weihnacht,
Nur ein Nilpferd macht mich froh,

All in all, German dancers do not listen to the lyrics of a Grand Square.
But if these are translated, they understand them. An infamous example is
“Put Another Log On The Fire”:

Deutsche Tänzer achten selten auf die Verse eines Grand Squares.
Werden diese aber übersetzt, dann werden sie verständlich.
Ein berüchtigtes Beispiel ist: „Put Another Log On The Fire“:

I not only sing the middle break and End in German,
I sing polyphon, sing my tune while the record plays its own:

Bei dem Stück „It ‘s Hard To Be Humble“
singe ich den Middle Break und das Ende nicht nur auf Deutsch,
sondern auch polyphon, ich singe meine Melodie,
während die Platte ihre eigene spielt:

25 years ago this was grave heresy; now it is requested.

Vor 25 Jahren war das schwere Ketzerei; nun wird es gewünscht.

Then came two tunes of German origin:
“Mack is Back” (where I sing Bert Brecht’s lyrics)
and “Glow Worm”.

Dann kamen zwei Melodien deutschen Urspungs:
Mäckie Messer (wo ich Bert Brechts Verse singe)
und Glühwürmchen.

The newcomers were still around, so we all did
the 2nd Hannover Triplet to the tune “Old Comrads”
from the Greensleeves Band:
